Trendy Tuesday: Cakes

It is a very fun Trendy Tuesday today because.... it's Halloween!!! And what better wedding trend could we look at other than something sweet and a treat, wedding cakes! Lisa with Cake Expressions by Lisa has shared some wonderful upcoming trends and tips with us all about wedding cakes.

Designing wedding cakes just keeps getting more and more exciting. There are so many great trends right now it’s great fun to keep creating something different within each one. Sure to still be “hot” in 2018 are metallics. Now though, instead of just gold, we’re seeing rose gold, bronze, silver and pewter. The great thing about metallics is they’re not just for super formal cakes but look just as good as an accent on a simpler cake too.

Let’s talk marble. Marbled fondant or marbled buttercream, you can’t go wrong! Such a great way to add extra interest to your cake. And when you add in that touch of metallic-simply gorgeous!

Texture. Well, what can we say about texture except “Yes please!” So many unique and fun ways to add this to your cake. Cakers everywhere are always working on new ways to create texture and movement on cakes which brings such visual interest. Whether it’s with buttercream, icing drips or fondant the possibilities are seemingly endless!

Flowers. 90% of cakes have some sort of florals on them, whether it be intricately hand made sugar flowers or gorgeous fresh blooms from your florist. Either way, placement on the cake remains about the same, loose and flowing is the way to go. Big flowing clusters, or just one focal point that says it all!

Colors. Still on point are soft palettes including blush, pinks and ivory’s, but bolder colors are on the horizon. Purples, burgundy and navy have had enough of being overlooked and are well on their way into the spotlight.

Time to eat! No need to have a beautiful cake that doesn’t taste good, right? You should never have to choose between the two. Flavors can be simple, tried and true that everyone loves, but why not throw in something a little out of the ordinary or even seasonal? For summer a coconut cake with key lime buttercream is so refreshing. Fall calls for pumpkin spice with cream cheese. For spring adding in fresh fruits is a welcome surprise. Having a winter wedding (like I did)? Perfect time to try those liquor spiked cakes: Kahlua, Bailey’s, Bourbon and more. Those would be sure to warm you and your guests up!

No matter what the trends are though, be sure to pick something that you love, both to look and and to eat. You’ll be the one looking back 20 years from now and reminiscing about how you and your groom chose the perfect cake for your perfect day!
